Stuart Davis Optimum Building Design Ltd.

“I first came into contact with Skilled Ecology via their website. I was so pleased with Roger's helpful and competent approach that we now consult with him on all of our projects that require input on biodiversity issues. What began as a one off consultation has turned into an ongoing professional relationship, and I would have no hesitation in recommending Skilled Ecology to other potential clients.”

Other Protected Species

Badgers

Although relatively common and widespread, primarily to prevent cruelty, Badgers and their setts are protected from harm under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and so to ensure legal compliance, signs and evidence of Badgers should be checked for during ecology assessments. Also, Local Planning Authorities may occasionally request a survey specifically for Badgers to assess for any likely impacts, if they are known to be in the area.

We are trained and experienced in undertaking surveys for Badgers and their setts and aim to work with developers to actively avoid impacts where possible, or if impact on Badgers was considered unavoidable then we can design and implement mitigation and compensation of habitats.

Initial inspections for Badger activity can be conducted at any time of year. However, finding setts in thick vegetation can be difficult, therefore a winter assessment (when vegetation is reduced) may be appropriate.

Invertebrates

Some invertebrate species are legally protected under the Countryside and Wildlife Act 1981 and many others are Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and are therefore material considerations for individual planning decisions under National Planning Policy Framework.

We are trained and experienced in undertaking protected and BAP invertebrate habitat scoping assessments, as well as key species presence/absence and population estimate surveys. Our surveys follow standardised survey guidelines and the methodology is repeatable if further monitoring is required.

Primarily we will look to avoid impact on any protected or BAP invertebrates should they occur on your site. However, if impact was considered unavoidable then mitigation strategies can be designed and implemented.

Invertebrate habitat scoping surveys can be conducted at any time of year, though peak survey periods vary between species.

Birds

With the exception of some pest species all nesting birds are protected from harm. Some individual bird species are protected further under the Countryside and Wildlife Act 1981. These protected bird species and the many other Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species are material considerations for individual planning decisions under National Planning Policy Framework.

We are trained and experienced in undertaking bird surveys. Primarily we will look for ways of avoiding impact to protected and/or BAP bird species, although if this is not possible or practical we are also experienced in designing and undertaking mitigation strategies. By following standard survey guidelines you can be assured of quality and that all possible efforts will be made to satisfy the Local Planning Authority and other interested parties.

Some bird surveys can be conducted at any time of year, though breeding bird surveys are best conducted in spring and early summer.
