Great Crested Newts are a UK and European legally protected species and are also a Priority UK Biodiversity Action Plan species. Therefore, Great Crested Newts command the highest protection available for UK wildlife and are material considerations for individual planning applications under National Planning Policy Framework.

At Skilled Ecology our newt licensed staff are trained and experienced in undertaking Great Crested Newt Surveys, including Great Crested Newt habitat suitability scoping surveys and Great Crested Newt presence/absence and population estimate surveys.

At Skilled Ecology we aim to avoid impact and unnecessary Great Crested Newt surveys and Great Crested Newt mitigation. However, if impact on Great Crested Newts was considered unavoidable we can also design and implement mitigation strategies including exclusion fencing and relocation.

By following standard Great Crested Newt survey guidelines designed by Natural England and Froglife you can be assured of the necessary quality to satisfy Local Planning Authorities.

Habitat suitability assessments for Great Crested Newts can be conducted at any time of year but please note that pond presence/absence and population estimate Great Crested Newt surveys need to be conducted between March and the start of June.
