Although these are all ecology surveys, the names of assessments vary primarily due to different levels of survey effort and depth of detail in the reports.

However, ecology surveys such as Extendend Preliminary Ecological Appraisals are designed to provide information on the risk of presence of protected, BAP or rare species and the likelihood of the development impacting on such species.

Based on the Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, recommendations can be made for avoidance or precautionary measures and only if necessary the need for further ecology surveys,in order to design appropriate and proportionate compensation of habitats or mitigation.
